Turn any graphite golf club shaft into a two-part travel shaft.
This guide shows you how to install the External DuraLock to an existing club.
Important
The most critical part of this process is making accurate cuts, so take extra care with your measurements.
Installation is designed to be done by an experienced club-fitter or golf pro.
What you need
Once the shaft is cut in the correct location, the rest follows a standard shaft-to-hosel fitting process using:
DuraLock
Digital calipers for measuring
A brass shim (larger size better, bent to fit, and “leaves” trimmed by ~5 mm)
Step 1: Measure the Internal Diameter (Ref ID)
Measure the internal diameter (ID) of the upper part of the connector (the section that fits over the grip end). This measurement is the same for both right-handed and left-handed clubs.
Using properly zeroed calipers, measure the ID at several points to find an average.
Example:Â
Measurement 1: 12.85 mm
Measurement 2: 12.83 mm
Measurement 3: 12.87 mm
Average: 12.85 mm
Therefore, in this example, the Reference ID (Ref ID) is 12.85 mm
Step 2: Determine the Cutting Diameter (Cut OD)
To allow for sanding and epoxy, the shaft's outer diameter (OD) at the cut point must be slightly smaller than the connector's internal diameter.
As the cut is made 25 mm into the upper bore, and with a typical shaft taper of 1:100 (0.25 mm over 25 mm), the formula is:
Cut OD = Ref ID - (0.1 + 0.25)
Example:
Therefore, in this example, the Cut OD = (12.85 mm - 0.35 mm) or 12.50 mm
Step 3: Mark and Cut the Shaft
Find the point on the shaft at your Cut OD (In this example where the diameter is 12.50 mm), and mark the spot using a pen suitable for graphite shafts.
Cut the shaft using your preferred method.
Step 4: Test Fit and Preparation
Test fit the shaft and connector. They should loosely join together, though further adjustment is needed to finalize the fit.
Step 5: Adjust for Length
After assembly, the shaft and connector will be approximately 18 mm too long.
To correct this, cut 18 mm from the lower end of the shaft.
Step 6: Final Fitting and Shimming
Once the length is corrected, there are several variations to normal process
Tip end
The tip end shaft will be loose, so you must use a brass shim to center the shaft within the connector. Adjust and trim the shim to fit snugly, and trim the leaves to ensure they will be hidden from view, and apply epoxy beads/sand during assembly to secure the shim and maintain alignment.
Grip end
No shim is needed, but use shafting beads or sand as per normal practice.
Important notes
Shaft insertion depth: 25 mm
Sand only 22 mm of the shaft to avoid visible sanding marks (since there's no ferrule to cover the joint).
The larger diameter of the connection provides plenty of surface area for bonding.Â
Summary
Use the upper connector part’s internal diameter ID as your reference Ref ID.
Subtract approximately 0.35 mm from Ref ID to calculate your cutting diameter Cut OD.
Remove 18 mm from the lower shaft end to maintain correct club length.
Sand back shafts just 22 mm.
Use a brass shim and epoxy to center and secure the shaft parts to the DuraLock connector.
Once you've made the 1st cut in the right place, the rest of the process is simple!
