Q Golf was founded by the father/son team, Simon and Jamie Moore, keen golfers based in New Zealand. Here's the Q Golf story:
1990s: Seeds Of Idea Planted
Simon (an optometrist and three-handicap golfer at the time) bought a "Universal Golf Club" out of sheer curiosity. After trying it out, he found the concept of an all-in-one club interesting, but the adjustment mechanism was clunky and error-prone. The seeds of an idea were planted.
2000s: Experience In Golf Adjustment
Simon moves into the golf industry, developing the world's first 100% focused belly-putter company, Puku. Belly putting was eventually outlawed in 2016, but a key aspect of Puku was the creation of an adjustable length mechanism. This evolved into a range of other technology and patents. IP was eventually licensed to Taylormade and Ping and then sold to Nike for usage in the popular Covert range of drivers and woods used by Tiger Woods and Rory McIroy.
April 2020: R&D Begins
With COVID-19 quickly expanding, and to encourage spending, New Zealand government agency Callaghan Innovation offers $50,000 grants to explore new business initiatives. Simon receives one of these grants and uses it to hire an engineer and quickly prototype his revolutionary all-in-one concept.
May 2021: Urquhart Born
Development continues beyond the initial grant and a company is formed, Urquhart Golf. Named after Robert Lish Urquhart, who created the very first adjustable loft golf club in 1893.
Mid-2021: Jamie Joins as Co-Founder
Simon's son, Jamie (also a keen golfer), uses the early prototype for an evening nine-hole game and has an 'ah ha' moment — this is a beautifully simple way to play and should be a big part of the game. Wheels are set in motion, eventually leading to Jamie selling his website design business and joining Simon as a co-founder.
2022: Kickstarter and Urquhart Becomes Q Golf
Refinement continues, manufacturing and design partners are engaged, and a launch is set for early 2022 using the crowdfunding Kickstarter platform. As part of the launch period, Urquhart registers for a stand at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida.
It is on the stand that the team realizes the name Urquhart, while rich in history, needs to be easier to read, say and remember. On the show's final day, a decision is made to take the unique "Q" letter from Urquhart and simplify the company and product name to simply Q.
A successful launch happens on Kickstarter, with roughly 600 sold to 30 countries in a couple of weeks.
2023 & 2024
1,000s of golfers in 50+ countries and all 50 States are enjoying the lighter golf experience of Q. Q Golf is expanding a network of Authorized Resellers worldwide to make trying and getting one even easier.
After working in a part-time role for Q Golf, Scott Dawley joins the co-founders as the first outside hire. Scott leans into the role of Director of Digital Content & Communications, paving the way for his eventual promotion to Chief Experience Officer in November, 2024.
