The History of Adjustable Golf Clubs

Q isn't the first all-in-one club, in fact, there have been somewhere between 50 and 100 different options created since 1893!

Below is an overview of some of the key developments in the history of adjustable golf clubs. We have all of these clubs at Q HQ and have tried each out. We will continue to expand this with more prominent all-in-one clubs.

Have a suggestion for an extra inclusion? We'd love to hear it. Let us know in the comments below.

Urquhart (approx. 1893-1916)

Our Rating: 5/5 - truly incredible for its day

Yes, really! The Urquhart was the first recorded adjustable loft club and was a technological marvel (we have one here at Q HQ)

Fun facts:

  • Q Golf was originally called Urquhart Golf as a tribute to this club. In early 2022 we changed our name to better fit our mission of simply, lighter golf: announcement.

  • The original Urquhart adjustable golf club was used in the 1915 British Open Championship, by a player who finished in the top 25%

Super Stick (approx. 1970s)

Our Rating: 2/5 - very complex operation

This 17-in-1 club was produced throughout the 1970s and came with a telescopic shaft. The adjustment mechanism requires quite a lot of thought and attention! It's hard to hit, but this is largely due to the small face sizes of early clubs.

Divnick Whole-In-One (approx. 1992 - Present)

Our Rating: 3/5 - hits.. ok

Divnick is one of the most popular all-in-one clubs currently on the market. It features a larger more modern head than early clubs and a collapsable shaft. Adjustment is done via loosening a 'locking lever' and moving to one of 34 different loft settings.

Q (2022 - Present)

Q is the first time modern materials and design techniques have been applied to the concept of an adjustable all-in-one golf club. We've paid a great deal of attention to creating a club that not only adjusts, but plays well at all loft settings. Key decisions:

  • A large forgiving head and face

  • A graphite shaft by default (from our research, telescopic introduces to much compromise to playability)

  • Modern materials and manufacturing techniques used throughout

  • The adjustment mechanism has been created in a way so that the harder you swing, the more the locking force. Adjustment involves simply pushing the head and hosel together and twisting.
